Hands on Hats

Coif Panel

Shaped linen panel embroidered all over with a scrolling stem pattern with leaves, pea pods, various flowers, and insects. Worked in polychrome thread and gilt metal thread using plaited braid, buttonhole stitches and couching. Some of the flowers and pea pods are worked in raised buttonhole stitch, and there are also applied silver spangles. It is thought that the coif was made up when it entered the Guild's collection and that it was unpicked some time after 1966.

Britain, 1600 - 1630
length (top hem): 45cm
length (bottom hem): 30.5cm
Gift of Lady Mary Cayley EG161
