Colouring fabrics and threads
There are three basic methods:
- Putting fabrics and threads
in a coloured liquid (a dye)
- Using a coloured liquid
(a paint) or coloured solid (a crayon) and placing the colour on the fabric
or threads. You can use brush, spray, stamp or stencil
- Putting a special transfer
paint or transfer crayon onto paper, and then ironing the paper onto fabric
to transfer the colour
IMPORTANT RULES whichever
method you use
- Always wash your fabrics
or threads before dyeing or painting them
- Read the instructions
on the containers of paints, dyes or crayons and make sure you follow them,
especially those that concern your own and other people's health and safety
- If any ironing is needed,
consult an adult - who may think it safer to do it for you!
- Use rubber gloves when
you can, but in any case always wash your hands after using dyes or
paints
- Don't eat or drink while
you are working with dyes or paints
- Try not to breathe in
near open jars or pots of dye or paint. Keep them covered whenever you can,
and have a window open if possible. be especially careful with powdered dye
or paint
- Also be especially careful
when using glues of any kind. Don't leave their tubes or jars open when you're
not using them; always have a window open when you are using them; and try
not to breathe their fumes
- Don't use the containers
or tools (spoons, etc.) you use for dyes or paints for anything else. Keep
them for your next dyeing or painting session or throw them away
- Protect your clothes
by wearing an overall of some kind
- Protect your working
surface by covering it with newspaper or polythene
