Gad's Hill Young Embroiderers

Biodiversity Project 1997

Animals, birds and fish were chosen from the book "Traditional Animal Designs and Motifs for Artists and Craftspeople" by Madeleine Orban Szontagh.

The motifs were divided into three sections:

cat horse The animals were cut out of felt, stitched and decorated. They were stuck on a large inner circle (on the panel) which represented land. It was made out of bubble wrap stuck onto some material. The large bubbles were slit open and stuffed with wool of different shades of green.

turtle The fish and amphibians have also been made on felt. This time, they were decorated using Foil Magic. First, a pattern of lines was traced out on the felt shapes. Glue was applied to the lines and it was left to dry. Then the foil was rubbed onto each line. The girls loved this excellent technique. The aqueous animals were put onto a circular crown (surrounding the land) of bubbly wrapping plastic which had been sprayed with a pale blue acrylic paint.

birds blue bird Birds and butterflies were made by sticking petals on the shapes of these animals cut in Bondaweb. (Instructions for this technique are on the banner page.) The creatures of the air were stuck on a brown paper background (the rest of the panel) which had been painted, waxed and polished.

The panel itself was made stronger with some fabric backing (onto which everything was firmly attached). It was then hung from a pole.
