We were recently sent photographs of the weaving and canvaswork done by children at the After-School Care Centre at Sea Point Primary School in Cape Town, South Africa.
The children, who range from 4 to 12 years old, work with Toody Mouton, a foundation member of Cape Embroiderers' Guild and a former member of the Embroiderers' Guild, UK. She chose canvaswork as an easy and inviting medium to get the children started, and, as you can see, they love getting to grips with needle and thread. Both children and teacher learn a great deal in the process!
Even children too young to get their tongues round the word 'embroidery' look forward eagerly to their stitching (or 'knitting', as some of them say). 'Boidy please', they shout excitedly after school. Toody's way of teaching is informal and fun, and the older children help the younger ones too.

Toody has started teaching in the school as well - Extra-mural Arts and Crafts. Beads, threads, fabrics, paper, colour, texture and design are all part of the lessons there.
Thanks to Kay Maclaurin for sending this information - let us know what's happening in embroidery education or textiles teaching in your part of the world and we'll do our best to share it on-line!
