We looked at the treads on the bottom of trainers and other shoes, made rubbings of them, chose the ones we liked or we thought would be easy to sew, drew them with chalk and stitched the designs.
Mike and I made a kind of chairback with a panel of six squares with different patterns in, simply sewn with white wool on blue fabric.
I've seen effective pictures of just the shoeprint. Other ideas could arise from tyre prints, leaf rubbings, you name it...
