Money Money Money

Young Quilters invited Young Embroiderers to take part in a competition at
The Festival of Quilts
19 - 22 August 2004
The National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham

sponsored by Brother

The competition was open to anyone under the age of 16. They did not have to be a member to take part. All they had to do was to create a wall hanging of two or more layers. This could be any size, using any technique. There were three age categories: 8 and under, 9 - 11 and 12 - 16.

At the show the display of Money was different from displays by Young Embroiderers in that there were no labels or titles on the work. It was not possible to see how many young Embroiderers took part or where those who took part came from because the entries were identified by numbers.

The judges were Fay Allwood, President of the Quilters' Guild and Michael Spender, then Director of the Embroiderers' Guild. The judges used the same criteria as for judging the adult competitions: they looked for good design - the visual impact, colour and composition of the work; and workmanship in the execution of the chosen technique and overall finish of the work; and also quilting/surface embellishment in the design and techniques used. The judges thought that all the entries were very impressive and were very pleased to see that there were so many entries in the 12 - 16 age group. They said that it was very difficult to select the winners as all the entries were inventive and full of creative ideas.
