When you are walking past
building sites have you ever stopped to look at the patterns created by the
piles of bricks, pipes, tiles, etc.? They make wonderful designs just waiting
to be stitched! BUT never go on to a building site, because they are very
dangerous places - do your drawings from a safe distance!
For this project I have
sketched some of these patterns and worked them onto a hat. The same pattern
could be used for other designs, but here is how to make a builders hat! (Clicking
on the numbers will jump you down to the instructions.)
- Begin
by taking your measurements for the hatband by measuring around your head
just above your ears and from this line straight up to the top of your head.
Make a pattern to these measurements.
- to draw
the circle for the top of the hat you have to divide the all-round measurement
by six. Then set your compasses to this measurement and draw the circle. Cut
this out and you now have both patterns for your hat.
- Now
fill these shapes with your design. The designs in the illustrations are
based on pipes for the top of the hat and on bricks for the band. You can
use any embroidery technique you like. Applique might be good with embroidery
stitches to give texture - you could even use beads for a very special hat.
When you cut out the finished shapes remember to leave a seam allowance.
- Turn
up a small hem on the bottom long edge of the band.
- Use pins
to divide the circle and the band into eight equal parts.
- Join the
short ends of the band.
- Matching
the positions of the pins in the top and the band, stitch the band on to the
top, right sides together. Turn the right side out and you have your finished
hat.
