A box of sweets

sweet wrapper fabric boxThis simple box is made from Sweet Wrapper Fabric and is filled with sweets. Each sweet is wrapped in spare strips and then tied with a narrow ribbon. A gift tag completes an ideal present.

Sweet wrapper fabric (SWF)

To make this SWF you will need:

1 Lay the cotton out onto a large sheet of paper and tape down, then select large wrappers and paste into position on the cotton, all over.
2 Select patterned papers and contrast colours and cut into smaller circles/squares/triangles and rectangles. Arrange into a decorative pattern on top of the squares and paste into position. Use transparent wrappers here and there to give a different colour combination
3 Cover your design with the net and pin carefully into position and then turn over.
4 With your ruler mark out 8 squares by dividing the length in half and the width into four. With a running stitch and your sewing thread, follow the lines, making sure that you catch in the net on the right side.
5 On the right side you can decorate your work with various stitches in coloured embroidery threads, running, fly and cross stitches being the easiest. Try to do some in each square.
6 Put a piece of cloth over the fabric and press gently.

Sweet wrapper fabric box

To make this SWF box you will need:

sweet wrapped in strips
  • Card from a cereal box or something similar
  • Paper scissors
  • Fabric scissors
  • Quick drying craft glue
  • One large bead
  • Small length of fine ribbon
  • A small piece of fine cord (for the button hook)
  • Box lining (this can be a fine cotton or a fancy wrapping paper)
  • Sweets for box
  • Masking tape/sellotape

glueing the fabric to card

1 Cut out 6 x 6 cm squares in the card and arrange like the diagram on the back of your SWF using the craft glue to stick into place. Glue the fine cord into a loop at the centre of the lid square (when it is dry, stitch it as well)
2 When the card is dry, cut carefully with your fabric scissors around the shape and the base (be careful not to cut off the loop)
3 Cover the card side with fabric glue (make sure you go round the edges), lay the SWF, card side down, onto the back of your lining. Put something heavy on top for a while and then leave to dry.

constructing the box

4 When the glue is dry, cut around the edge again carefully (mind the loop). With a contrast embroidery thread, start to oversew the edges. Starting at A oversew round the edges of the lid and along to B (this will be the rim of the box). Fold the box to form the four sides (following the joins of the card inside) and join edge AC to edge BC with oversewing.
5

Oversew the four edges of the base square to the bottom edges of the box. Sew on the button so that the loop will go over it.
Use the spare bits to cut into strips and a rectangle, and oversew around the edges

6 Tie strips around the sweets and tie on the tag. Fill the box with sweets and fasten the loop onto the button.
